Select Materials Around the Product and Target Market
Fabric selection affects the fit, comfort, appearance, durability and production cost of men’s underwear. Fibrena Underwear works with importers, wholesalers and private label brands to define materials for boxer briefs, trunks, briefs and selected performance or lightweight styles.
Our current material range includes cotton and combed-cotton blends, modal blends, bamboo-derived regenerated cellulose blends, fabrics commonly marketed as ice silk, and polyester/spandex combinations. Exact fiber composition, GSM, stretch and finish are confirmed according to each project rather than relying only on a general material name.
Buyers can begin with an existing fabric reference, a physical garment sample or a required composition and performance target.
Cotton, Modal and Bamboo-Derived Options
Cotton and cotton/spandex fabrics are commonly selected for basic underwear, repeat wholesale collections and everyday private label programs. Buyers should confirm whether standard cotton or combed cotton is required, together with the blend ratio, weight and stretch level.
Modal and modal blends provide a smoother hand feel and softer drape. Because the material behaves differently from cotton, pattern dimensions and sewing conditions may need adjustment before the fit can be approved.
Bamboo-derived underwear usually uses regenerated cellulose fibers or blends rather than untreated natural bamboo fiber. The exact composition should be stated on the approved specification and care label. Sustainability or environmental claims should only be used when supported by the relevant material documentation.
Lightweight and Polyester/Spandex Fabrics
“Ice silk” is a commercial description used for several lightweight, smooth-touch fabrics rather than one fixed fiber. For accurate sourcing, buyers should confirm the actual composition, GSM, surface feel, opacity, stretch and recovery required.
Polyester/spandex fabrics are suitable for easy-care, quick-dry and shape-retentive programs. The percentage of spandex, knitted construction and fabric weight affect compression, recovery and fit. Performance requirements should be defined before sampling rather than assumed from the material name.
When a new fabric changes the stretch or drape of an existing style, the pattern may need to be reviewed through our custom size and fit development process.
GSM, Stretch and Recovery Confirmation
Two fabrics with the same composition can produce different results if their GSM, knitting structure or finishing differs. Material approval should therefore consider:
- Fiber composition and blend ratio
- Fabric weight and thickness
- Horizontal and vertical stretch
- Elastic recovery
- Hand feel and drape
- Opacity
- Surface appearance
- Expected washing performance
A fabric swatch can be used for initial review, but a garment sample gives a clearer indication of fit, seam behavior and overall appearance.
Color, Sampling and Material Approval
Available fabric colors can reduce development time and material MOQ. Custom dyeing against a Pantone reference may require a higher minimum quantity and additional preparation time. Color approval should consider fabric type because the same target shade can appear different on cotton, modal and synthetic blends.
Detailed color development can be reviewed through custom color and Pantone matching.
Custom samples normally require approximately 7–15 days, depending on fabric availability, color, construction and trim preparation. The approved garment sample should confirm how the selected material works with the pattern, stitching and waistband before bulk production.
MOQ and Bulk Material Control
Typical MOQ is approximately 500–1,000 pieces per style and color for standard programs. Private label orders commonly require around 1,000–3,000 pieces. New fabric development, custom dyeing or special finishes may require higher quantities based on the material supplier’s minimum.
Before cutting, incoming fabric can be checked against the approved reference for shade, width, hand feel and visible defects as applicable. Further details are explained on our fabric inspection and material preparation page.
